Cancer-Causing Agents Found in 12 Cakes from Bengaluru Bakeries

Introduction

In a concerning revelation, the Karnataka government issued a public warning after harmful, cancer-causing substances were discovered in cakes sold by several bakeries in Bengaluru. These findings come amidst heightened scrutiny over food safety in the state, particularly after the recent ban on the use of harmful artificial food dyes in street foods like gobi manchurian and cotton candy.

Harmful Additives in Bengaluru Cakes

Recent tests by the Karnataka Food Safety and Quality Department uncovered the presence of dangerous food additives in 12 different cake varieties. Out of 235 cake samples tested, several were found to contain artificial coloring agents like Allura Red, Sunset Yellow FCF, Ponceau 4R, Tartrazine, and Carmoisine, which exceeded the prescribed safety limits. These chemicals, used to enhance the appearance of cakes such as red velvet and black forest, have been linked to cancer and other serious health issues.Srinivas K, Karnataka’s Food Safety Commissioner, warned bakeries across the state about the dire consequences of using unsafe chemicals. He stressed the need for immediate compliance with food safety standards or face strict penalties under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Health Risks of Artificial Colors

The additives found in the cake samples are known to pose significant health risks, including potential links to cancer. Overuse of these chemicals could also negatively affect both mental and physical health. According to experts, these artificial colors are regulated strictly because of their long-term effects on the human body. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has long banned certain substances and imposed stringent limits on the use of artificial food dyes. These regulations ensure that consumers are protected from the hazardous effects of excessive chemical use in food products.

Government Action and Response

Following the discovery, the Karnataka government is taking decisive action to address food safety concerns. Bakeries found in violation of safety regulations will face strict penalties, including fines and potential closure. The Food Safety Commissioner also pointed out that this is part of an ongoing effort to crack down on food adulteration across the state. In addition to cakes, inspections conducted in August and September revealed substandard samples in paneer, khoya, and various food items sold at railway food stalls and tourist hotspots.

Conclusion

The discovery of harmful additives in cakes from Bengaluru bakeries underscores the importance of stringent food safety practices. As the festive season approaches, authorities are doubling down on inspections to protect public health. Consumers are urged to be cautious and ensure that the food they purchase meets safety standards.
