FDCA Tightens Checks on Misbranded Edible Oils

Rising Incidents of Misbranding and AdulterationInstances of traders selling adulterated edible oils have been on the rise, particularly in South Gujarat. According to a top official from a leading edible oil manufacturer, raids have uncovered rackets where duplicate cottonseed oil was being sold under the guise of well-known brands. In some cases, palm oil was being repackaged in tins labeled as cottonseed oil."We have informed various government authorities about the racket and are working closely with law enforcement to take action," the official noted.

FDCA’s Response: Increased SurveillanceHG Koshia, the commissioner of Gujarat FDCA, emphasized the importance of ensuring food safety for consumers:"We are committed to taking all necessary actions to ensure that citizens receive pure food products. With the festive season approaching, we will increase surveillance to prevent the sale of misbranded and adulterated products such as ghee, paneer, and edible oils."In response to the growing concerns, FDCA has begun testing samples from misbranded edible oil packs, ensuring that any violations are swiftly addressed.

FSSAI Notices and Packaging ViolationsAlongside misbranding, the FDCA is also cracking down on packaging violations. Recently, 55 edible oil manufacturers in Gujarat were issued notices by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for reusing tin containers for packaging.The 2018 Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulation clearly states that "tin containers once used shall not be reused for packaging of food" to prevent potential contamination risks. The misuse of packaging materials without proper cleaning or repurposing poses significant health hazards, prompting stricter enforcement of these regulations.
