FSSAI Directs States and UTs to Deploy Mobile Testing Vans for Milk Quality Ahead of Hol

With the festive season of Holi approaching, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken proactive measures to ensure the safety of milk and milk products. In a recent statement, FSSAI directed all states and Union Territories (UTs) to deploy Food Safety on Wheels (FSW) mobile food testing vans to check for adulteration in milk and related products. This move comes in response to the rising demand for milk during the festive period, making it crucial to ensure the availability of pure and safe products for consumers.

The FSSAI has requested that the Commissioners of Food Safety in all states and UTs test at least 10 samples of milk and milk products regularly. This effort is aimed at enhancing vigilance and curbing the adulteration of milk with substances such as urea, added water, and other harmful additives.

Currently, there are 168 Food Safety on Wheels vans equipped to conduct on-the-spot tests for food safety, including key tests for milk quality. These tests assess various parameters such as:

Fats

Solid-not-fat (SNF)

Protein content

Adulterants like added water, urea, sucrose, maltodextrin, and ammonium sulphate

The goal is to safeguard public health by ensuring that milk products are free from contamination and meet food safety standards during the high-demand period.

As the Holi festival is traditionally associated with sweets and dairy-based items, ensuring the integrity of milk products is essential. FSSAI’s directive to deploy these mobile testing vans is a critical step towards addressing concerns over milk adulteration and ensuring consumers have access to safe, high-quality dairy products during the festive season.
